Put the right dates on the calendar.
UCR has announced that registration for 2027 opens October 1, 2026. Existing operations subject to UCR must complete registration and payment before January 1, 2027 to continue operating legally. Plan to finish by December 31; do not assume an enforcement grace period.
Official UCR dates and fee brackets
Check whether UCR applies.
Start with UCR’s official eligibility guide. The answer depends on your business and operation, not simply how many trucks you have. A route entirely inside one state can still be part of an interstate shipment.
Use the UCR Handbook and your base-state agency for questions about your situation. UCR registration is separate from updating your USDOT record.
The approved 2027 UCR fees.
Use the registration year you are filing for. These are annual UCR fees per entity, not monthly AxleBell subscription prices.

Brokers and leasing companies acting solely in those capacities pay $55 per entity for 2027. Mixed operations should confirm their classification with UCR. The 2027 fees take effect October 1, 2026. Sources: UCR fee brackets and the final federal rule (PDF, fee table).
Have these things ready.
- Your business details. Gather your USDOT number, legal business name, contact details and prior registration information so the person filing can check for discrepancies.
- Your fleet records. Confirm the count using the applicable registration method. Count qualifying power units rather than trailers separately. Trailer weight can affect whether the towing unit qualifies. Check the official Handbook before applying exclusions.
- A person responsible for review. As a practical step, decide who will verify the registration year, business information, counting method and fee before payment.
- A place for the receipt. After filing, save the confirmation with the registration year and supporting records. Record completion separately from the reminder to file.
When registration is open, use ucr.gov to complete the official process. Check current instructions and payment details there. For registration questions, UCR lists 1-833-827-7526.

Is UCR the same as an MCS-150 update?
No. They are separate tasks. FMCSA’s current temporary relief for certain biennial updates does not waive UCR registration. Read the current FMCSA notice if you are also reviewing your USDOT record.
Does a small fleet automatically qualify for an exemption?
No. Check your operation against the official UCR eligibility guidance. The lowest carrier fee bracket includes zero to two countable vehicles; a low count by itself is not an exemption.
